Why is the mouse cursor... crooked?

Have you ever wondered why your mouse cursor has a… slight tilt to the left? This tilt in the “arrow” that we use every day on our computer, came, according to some opinions , from a very specific reason that goes back several years. There are other explanations, but let's look at the one given by computer software developer,  Bart Gijssens , in what he writes on Stack Exchange .

Most of you probably know that the mouse, like its cursor, is a creation of Douglas Engelbart, while the arrow we all use today was originally designed without the leftward tilt.

However, when the Xerox Alto, the cursor acquired this tilt, according to Gijssens, due to the low resolution of screens at the time, which made it difficult for someone to distinguish an upright cursor, as you can see in the photo below.

mouse-cursor2Englebart seems to have been inspired by this for the slanted cursor, which was later, as Bart Gijssens adds, "borrowed" by Steve Jobs in his own software, as well as Bill Gates in Windows – and that's how it became established to this day...
