If the same survey had been conducted a few years ago, the results would have been very different. We knew that technology plays a very important role in our daily lives, that it facilitates our every move, but the statistics of the Mashable Statistics survey are truly incredible.
In a very clever online survey, through its website, Mashable came up with a list of ten things that we would find it difficult to part with in our daily lives. The special element of the survey, however, is that eight of the ten choices that the participants had were technological products. The other two? The, admittedly, most basic needs of the human species, food and sex.
The survey involved 2,210 U.S. adults who were asked to choose from a list of ten items. The results were remarkable. They may not have… stepped on the food button and selected it as their most basic need, but after that, five technological products followed, bringing sex to seventh place.
About three out of four believe that they could not endure a life without food. The remaining quarter apparently believes that with a basic and neutral diet they could live without any particular problems. Second on the list, by a distance from the third, comes the car. 42% of those surveyed believe that their car is an integral part of their life. That is, they could not live using public transportation.
This is followed by relatively small differences between them: access to the internet 28%, mobile phone 26%, computer 24% and television 23%. This essentially means that each of these four technological products is considered of utmost importance by one in four. If their percentages are not combined, then it is easy to conclude that very few people could live without constant contact with technology.
After this small series of technology, we reach the seventh position occupied by sex. The percentage of sexual intercourse in the preferences of Americans reaches 20%. That is, only one in five believes that sex is so important that it can significantly affect their lives. The rest do not give it, apparently, much importance.
In the last positions and without particularly large percentages are the three remaining technological products. The navigation system with 8%, social media with 7% and tablets with 6%. Even these percentages are impressive. Is it possible that about one in twelve Americans considers their GPS so important?
