Business giants "vote" for Piraeus as gateway to Europe

PORT-CARSAnother technological giant, the South Korean Samsung, seems to be seriously considering promoting its products in the markets of Central and Eastern Europe, through the port of Piraeus and specifically piers II and III of Piraeus Container Terminal (Piraeus Container Terminal), a subsidiary of the Chinese Cosco in the Greek market.

For this purpose, meetings will be held between executives of the Greek Transport and Communications Authority and senior executives of Samsung Electronics, in order for the former to present the cooperation model it has entered into with Hewlett Packard and TRAINOSE.

These developments are signaled by tomorrow's arrival of Boo-Keun Yoon, who leads Samsung's consumer electronics division.

According to PCC executives, the first contacts have already been made with Samsung executives in Greece, where the South Korean group's keen interest in utilizing the advantages of the port of Piraeus was recorded, with regard to its ability to function as an entry gateway for goods destined for European markets.

Mr. Yun's arrival is undoubtedly expected to be another step towards reaching an agreement. However, sources within the PCE pointed out that, at present, any discussions are purely exploratory in nature.
After all, as happened with Hewlett Packard, such agreements require considerable time to mature, while much will also depend on the improvement of the country's economy and its even greater stabilization within the Eurozone.

Of course, such a move, if made, will require considerable time to mature, but also certainty that our country can cope.

In any case, the fact that using PLO, in comparison to other major ports in Northern Europe, such as Rotterdam and Antwerp, saves at least six days, is an advantage that large multinational consumer goods groups can hardly ignore.

Furthermore, the imminent activation of the agreement with Hewlett Packard and subsequently the corresponding ones with the Chinese telecommunications groups Huawei and ZTE, are expected to increase interest from other companies, which will now be able to see in practice the benefits of cooperation with the Greek Port Authority and the Port of Piraeus.

Regarding the progress of the implementation of the agreement between Cosco and Hewlett Packard, everything indicates that it has entered the final stage of implementation.

As Cosco has announced, the official start of the agreement is scheduled for the first quarter, when rail services from the Piraeus container terminal will begin.

TRAINOSE has completed the pilot tests of the relevant railway line and within the coming weeks will sign a six-month pilot agreement to route one or two trains per week from the Cosco freight station in Piraeus to the Czech Republic, where HP has a product assembly plant.

Huawei and ZTE turn to Piraeus

According to the plan, and if everything goes smoothly, up to 76 HP containers are expected to be moved weekly, without the products being separated and stored before being shipped to their final destination.

Next, both Huawei and ZTE will take their turn, and they have also begun the necessary preparations.

A month ago, Huawei announced that it had started the pilot operation of its new distribution center at the Piraeus Container Terminal (PCT).

In this way, by utilizing the facilities of Cosco's subsidiary, SEP S.A., which have an annual capacity of four million containers, Huawei is expected to create a "gateway" for its products to enter the European market.

In turn, ZTE, in addition to its intention to make the port of Piraeus a transit center for the promotion of its products in Europe, has also expressed its desire to create a repair center in Greece, which is scheduled to begin operating in the coming months.
