Samsung Galaxy S5 to launch in April, likely with iris scanner

Speaking to Bloomberg, a Samsung executive claimed that the new "flagship" will also focus on the screen and construction materials.

samsung_galaxys5Samsung's new flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S5, will likely be released by April at the latest, according to Lee Young Hee, a senior executive at the Korean company's mobile division, in an interview with Bloomberg.

"Every year we announce our new flagship model in the first half of the year, around March or April, which is something we aim to do this year as well," Hee told the agency.

The S5 will have several design differences from its predecessor, as, as Hee admitted, the external similarity of the S4 to the S3 did not leave the best impression on consumers. "We will mainly emphasize the screen and the material of the device's cover," she added.

Following in the footsteps of Apple and the iPhone 5S, Samsung is also expected to incorporate biometric authentication technology into its new smartphone. However, unlike the iPhone 5S’ fingerprint sensor, the Korean company is focusing on iris scanning. “We are considering this option because many consumers are excited about this technology,” Hee said.

On the other hand, Hee confirmed that the Galaxy S5 will be launched with a new version of the Galaxy Gear, the "smart" watch that Samsung first presented in September, at the IFA technology show in Berlin. The new Galaxy Gear will have an improved design and will integrate sensors to record various biological parameters, such as the calories consumed by the wearer or their pulse.
