Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced: Freediving and new content

Ubisoft continues to reveal new details about Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced , showing that the new version of the 2013 classic isn't limited to improved graphics. Instead, the development team at Ubisoft Singapore appears to be reimagining core gameplay mechanics, enriching the experience for both longtime fans of the series and those new to Edward Kenway's pirate adventure.

The remake's existence had been leaked for some time, but its official presentation revealed that it is a much more ambitious project than the community initially expected. The changes are not limited to the technical area, but extend to gameplay, exploration, missions, and overall content.

The new Anvil Engine changes the experience

One of the most important elements of Black Flag Resynced is the transition to the modern version of the Anvil, which is now used in the newer titles in the Assassin's Creed series.

The new technology offers significantly upgraded lighting, improved character models, richer vegetation, more realistic water effects, and greater detail in the Caribbean environments. At the same time, the engine upgrade gave the creators the opportunity to redesign mechanics that were considered outdated in the original game.

Parkour now leverages technologies and movements developed for Assassin's Creed Shadows, making movement in cities, jungles, and ships more natural, faster, and significantly smoother.

Freediving across the map

The most recent revelation concerns one of the areas that players have been asking for upgrades for years: underwater exploration.

In an interview with GamesRadar, technical director Jussi Markkanen confirmed that players will now be able to dive almost anywhere in the game's marine world , and not just in the predefined spots with the familiar diving bells.

This change transforms the sea into another vast space to explore. Players will be able to search for hidden treasures, valuable items, rare resources, and new secrets without the limitations of the original title.

However, the classic diving bell missions are not being abolished. On the contrary, they return renewed, functioning as a complement to the new free diving system.

More shipwrecks and new reasons to explore

Ubisoft is aiming to make every journey with the Jackdaw more interesting. That's why new shipwrecks, hidden locations, and little stories that are only revealed through exploration.

Some of the new points of interest are located very close to the coast, while others require traveling to isolated areas of the map. The development team's goal is to reward the player's curiosity and constantly have new discoveries even after many hours of play.

This particular philosophy follows the logic of modern open-world titles, where the world does not simply function as a setting but as a key element of the experience.

More friendly gameplay

Special attention has also been paid to the missions that were the most criticized in the original Black Flag. Tailing missions and stealth objectives, which led to an instant Game Over with the slightest mistake, have been redesigned to offer greater freedom of movement.

Even if the player is detected, many missions will continue dynamically instead of automatically ending. This change is in line with the philosophy of newer Assassin's Creed games, where there is a greater emphasis on adapting gameplay based on the user's choices.

At the same time, the combat system has received significant improvements, offering smoother transitions between swordfights, pistols, and executions.

At the same time, the PS5 Pro version will take advantage of the console's capabilities with extensive use of ray tracing, 2160p resolution via PSSR technology, and significantly upgraded character models.

But beyond the technical upgrades, players will also find brand new content. The hideout in Great Inagua gains more management and upgrade capabilities, while three new members with distinct attributes are added to the Jackdaw's crew.

At the same time, the stories of important characters such as Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet, giving more depth to the relationships and events of the time.

Of particular interest is the information that the game's finale will be enriched with a brand new chapter, which is written by the original screenwriter of the story, Darby McDevitt. If confirmed, Black Flag Resynced will not be just a renewed version of the beloved title, but a substantially enriched experience that aspires to bring one of the top games in the Assassin's Creed series back to the modern era, with new content, improved mechanics and more reasons to explore.
