The official first presentation of the new Firefox operating system for smartphones was held today in Greece by Mozilla, at an event organized by Mozilla and the OTE group (OTE, Cosmote and GERMANOS), in collaboration with Hub:raum Krakow (an innovation incubator that supports young entrepreneurs in countries of Central and Eastern Europe). It is noted that Cosmote exclusively offers in Greece the ALCATEL One Touch Fire smartphone with the new platform. Developers were invited to develop code for applications based on the Firefox operating system.
For 7 full hours, that is, as long as the application development process lasted, the developers gave their best to develop applications that meet the criteria set by the Evaluation Committee. Among these, the originality and innovation of the application, the design and the web technologies used in its implementation, and the experience it can offer the user.
Based on these criteria, the Evaluation Committee selected in the first phase the 10 most prevalent applications, which were presented to the event audience and, subsequently, the top 3: The prize for the team of the major winners was a trip to Poland, where they will have the opportunity to participate in the hub:raum Krakow WARP program, while the second team won participation in the Selection Day that will take place on December 14, 2013 and is part of the COSMOTE StartUp program. The members of the third winning team received as a gift a new Alcatel One Touch Fire mobile phone, as did the members of the first and second teams.
The event was honored by the presence of internationally recognized speakers, such as Mozilla Evangelist Frederic Harper, Global Marketing Director for Firefox OS John Bernard, Business Development Manager & Evangelist of hub:raum Luka Sucic, as well as the Retail Marketing, Sales and Distribution Director of the OTE group Alexandros Dávos.
Within the framework of the event, the technical characteristics of the new Firefox OS operating system were also presented, as well as the capabilities and benefits it offers both to the developer community and to end users.
In absolute agreement with Mozilla's mission to promote openness, innovation and equal opportunities on the internet, Firefox OS is built as an open platform that enables programming a smartphone, each of its functions (calls, messages, navigation, etc.) can be developed as an app, using web technologies.
With a user interface that provides a beautiful, clean, intuitive and personalized user experience, based entirely on HTML5, Firefox OS makes the device's functions accessible that were previously available only in native applications.
Thus, smartphones with Firefox OS continuously evolve to meet users' needs and demands at any moment, according to their own interests and lifestyle, providing them with a relevant list of already downloaded or new applications.
By entering, for the sake of argument, the name of their favorite football team into the custom search, the phone's background will change, to depict it, and various apps will appear – for buying tickets or merchandise of that team or to learn the latest news about it.
