The European BlogForever project for the preservation and archiving of blogs, coordinated by the Department of Informatics of theAristotle University of Thessaloniki, has been successfully completed. The recovery, preservation, analysis and reuse of data from usually ephemeral blogs was the subject of the European research project BlogForever, coordinated by the Department of Informatics of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and successfully completed.
The project included, according to the National Documentation Centre (EKΤ), applied research in the field of web archiving, aiming at better exploitation of blog content for research and educational purposes. Web archiving is defined as the process of collecting and storing web pages in order to preserve them in a digital archive, accessible to the public and researchers. Archiving is considered a matter of utmost priority, as the average lifespan of web pages is less than 100 days, resulting in millions of web pages disappearing from the World Wide Web daily, ceasing to function for various reasons and thus continuously losing valuable information.
Blogs are a category of websites that have become particularly popular in recent years. A key feature of blogs is the relationships that develop between them, thus creating networks of information of particular value. The BlogForever project implemented an innovative data retrieval method that takes into account the hypertext, metadata and all interconnected files, such as images, multimedia, etc., hosted on blogs. In contrast to traditional web archiving methods that simply store web pages, BlogForever goes further, analyzing the data and structuring it according to a standard data model developed within the project.
