Apple appears to be silently updating some apps, based on some strange new update notes that have appeared in the App Store.

Over the past week, some app updates have included notes indicating that the update comes from Apple and not an app developer.

"This update from Apple will improve the functionality of this app. No new features are included," the description states.
Some of the apps that have been updated include Candy Crush Soda Saga, Sentry Mobile, Catan Universe, Bluetti, Mortal Kombat, Duet Display, VLC, and many more.

It's unclear what functionality Apple is improving with each app update. A developer on Reddit reported that Apple introduced the text in an app update that had the same version number and content as a previous update.

The update text appears in apps that haven't been updated in a while, as well as apps that have recently received updates, so it's unclear what the apps have in common. When analyzing the code of one of the apps that received an update from Apple, MacRumors couldn't find what had changed.

What these Apple updates could mean
Overall, Apple's move raises more questions than answers, as the lack of transparency around these specific interventions leaves room for speculation. Whether these are internal security optimizations or technical adjustments related to ecosystem compatibility, the fact that the changes are being made without clear notification to users or developers is a legitimate concern.

In any case, this phenomenon highlights the strong control that Apple maintains over the App Store environment, even over third-party applications. Whether these “silent” updates ultimately serve the interests of users or open a new debate about transparency and developer autonomyremains to be seen.
