Google: New deadline for Epic's consequences is October 29th

Tomorrow, October 22nd, was Google’s deadline to start opening up its app store, stop forcing developers to use Google Play Billing, allow them to set their own prices, and more, following Epic’s repeated victories in Epic v. Google. However, both Epic and Google have successfully argued for a one-week delay.

U.S. District Court Judge James Donatoagreed to postpone the enforcement of his permanent injunction until October 29.The order states:

“ORDER. Upon joint motion of the parties, MDL Dkt. No. 1110, the upcoming deadline of October 22, 2025, on which certain provisions of the Injunction, MDL Dkt No. 1017, in this case are scheduled to take effect, is vacated and extended until October 29, 2025. Signed by Judge James Donato on 10/20/2025.“

Google: New deadline for Epic's consequences is October 29th

It's unclear why Google requested the extension or why Epic agreed to it, especially since Epic CEO Tim Sweeneyhad previously celebrated the October 22 deadline as the day when "developers will have the legal right to guide Google Play users in the US to in-app payments without fees, scare screens, and friction - just like Apple App Store users in the US!" Public documents filed by both parties do not cite a reason for the delay.

So, October 29th is now the new date. Google previously told The Verge that it would comply with its legal obligations while it continues its appeal, so this is the day we expect to see Google's pages stop stating that Google Play Billing is required for developers distributing apps through Google Play.

Unless, of course, the Supreme Court grants a stay until then. Google has said it will file its appeal with the Supreme Court by October 27.
