The Court underlined the need to establish limits in order to ensure compliance with the requirements of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
The case was brought in 2014 by activist Maximilian Schrems, who claimed that Meta targeted him with ads based on his sexual orientation. The EU Court of Justice said that mentioning a person’s sexual orientation does not allow other relevant data to be used for advertising purposes. The Noyb organization welcomed the ruling, highlighting the importance of strict data erasure practices in all online advertising.
Meta told Reuters that it builds privacy into its products and does not use sensitive data to personalize ads. The announcement comes as Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed a lawsuit against TikTok for violating children's privacy laws
