Almost a week after unveiling the iPhone 16s, Apple confirmed one of the series' key specifications: all models feature 8GB of RAM.

Apple executive Johny Srouji confirmed the RAM capacity in an interview with Geekerwan, as reported by 9to5Mac. Apple, for some unknown reason, doesn't list RAM in official iPhone, meaning it often takes a lot of research to uncover the memory of the devices.

Recently, code spotted in an official Apple developer tool suggested that all iPhone 16 models will indeed be equipped with 8GB of RAM, and now we have confirmation. Last year, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max also had 8GB of RAM, while the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus were limited to 6GB.
This means that the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus offer an upgrade over previous models, while the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max don't have any additional RAM this year. Additionally, there's less of a distinction between the standard and Pro models.
The lack of a RAM boost can be disappointing, especially now that Apple Intelligence is just around the corner. Artificial intelligence (AI) require a lot of memory, especially when processing takes place on the device, so the extra RAM would definitely be helpful.
This also means that Apple's phones lag behind their Android rivals in this particular spec. For example, the recently released Google Pixel 9 has 12GB of RAM, while the Samsung Galaxy S24 offers 8GB. The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra even goes up to 12GB.

However, these numbers don't always tell the whole story. Apple has complete control over every aspect of the iPhone's design and architecture, which often allows it to add optimizations and tweaks that compensate for lower specs. Another example is battery capacity: iPhones often compete with their rivals in terms of battery, even with smaller batteries.

With iOS 18 set to launch tomorrow and Apple Intelligence coming shortly after, we'll have to wait and see how the 8GB of RAM will affect software performance . In the meantime, check out our hands-on review of the iPhone 16.
