CVE-2024-43491 – Remote Code Execution Vulnerability in Microsoft Windows Update

“Microsoft is aware of a vulnerability in the Servicing Stack, which has rolled back fixes for certain vulnerabilities affecting Optional Components in Windows 10, version 1507 (original release July 2015),” Microsoft explains.

“This means that an attacker could exploit these previously fixed vulnerabilities in Windows 10, version 1507 (Windows 10 Enterprise 2015 LTSB and Windows 10 IoT Enterprise 2015 LTSB) that have installed the Windows security update released on March 12 — 128K58B302 Build 10240.20526) or other updates released through August 2024. All newer versions of Windows 10 are not affected by this vulnerability.“.

“This vulnerability is addressed by installing the September 2024 Servicing stack update (SSU KB5043936) AND the September 2024 Windows security update (KB5043083), in that order.

The vulnerability affects Windows 10, version 1507, which stopped being supported in 2017, but also affects Windows 10 Enterprise 2015 LTSB and Windows 10 IoT Enterprise 2015 LTSB.
