US company Microchip Technology Incorporated has confirmed that a cyberattack that took place in August led to a breach of data employee . The Play ransomware gang has claimed responsibility for the attack .

On August 20, Microchip Technology revealed that operations at multiple manufacturing facilities were impacted by the cyberattack discovered three days earlier. As a result, the company was unable to fulfill orders and was forced to shut down some of systems to prevent the attack from spreading.
In a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Microchip Technology revealed that its operationally critical IT systems are now online and the company is essentially back up and running and able to process customer orders and ship products.

Microchip Technology added that the attackers had stolen some employee data, but it has not yet found evidence of customer data being stolen.
“While the investigation is ongoing, the Company believes that the unauthorized party obtained information stored on certain company systems, including employee contact information and certain encrypted and hashed passwords. We have not identified any customer or supplier data that was impacted,” Microchip Technology said.
The Play ransomware gang has leaked data online that it claims belongs to Microchip Technology. The company says it is investigating the validity of this claim with the help of external cybersecurity experts.

Microchip Technology is still assessing the extent and impact of the cyberattack. It is also still restoring some affected IT systems, although core systems are operating normally, and as previously stated, the company is accepting orders and shipping products.

The Play ransomware gang claimed responsibility for the attack on August 29, when it added the American company to the data leak website.
The hackers claimed to have stolen various information from the compromised Microchip Technology systems, including “private and personally confidential data, customer documents, budget data, payroll and accounting, contracts, identities, financial information,” and more.

The ransomware gang has since partially leaked the allegedly stolen data and threatened to leak the rest if the company does not give in to its demands.
