How to encrypt your emails?

Email encryption is the process of using algorithms to convert the content of an email into code, making it unavailable for reading to anyone who does not have the appropriate decryption key.

This means that even if someone manages to intercept your email, they will not be able to read its contents without the appropriate key.

What are the benefits of email encryption?

Email encryption offers increased security, protecting message content from unauthorized access.

This means that only the sender and recipient have the ability to read the message, ensuring the privacy of communications. Another important benefit of encryption is ensuring confidentiality: personal and professional information remains private and cannot be intercepted by third parties.

Additionally, encryption contributes to data integrity, ensuring that the content of the email has not been modified during its transmission. The use of encryption can enhance trust between communicating parties, offering additional guarantees for the security of the information exchanged. Finally, email encryption is critical for compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), thus protecting sensitive data from breaches.

How to set up encryption in popular email clients?

To set up encryption in Outlook, you first need to install an S/MIME certificate, which you can obtain from a trusted certificate authority. After you've finished installing the certificate, open Outlook and go to Account Settings. Select the 'Email Security' tab and add your certificate. Finally, enable encryption for outgoing messages.

In Thunderbird, encryption is done through the Enigmail add-on. First, install Enigmail from the Thunderbird. Next, you'll need to install GnuPG, which is required for encryption. Follow the Enigmail instructions to generate a PGP key pair and set up your email encryption.

For Apple Mail, the process is very simple if you already have an S/MIME certificate. Open Apple Mail and go to Preferences. Select the 'Accounts' tab and then your email account. Under the 'Security' tab, select your certificate to enable encryption. From here, you can choose to encrypt your outgoing messages.

In Gmail, encryption is not built-in and requires the use of additional tools, such as FlowCrypt. You can install this plugin from the Chrome Web Store and follow the instructions to generate a PGP key pair. After installation, you will be able to encrypt and decrypt emails directly from Gmail.

In contrast, with ProtonMail, encryption is already built in and is automatically enabled. When you send an email to another ProtonMail user, the message is automatically encrypted. To send encrypted messages to users of other services, you can select the 'Encrypt for Outside' option and set a passphrase, which you will share with the recipient.
