Harvard: Production of batteries for electric vehicles that charge in 10 minutes

At Harvard University, researchers have developed an innovative solid-state battery for electric vehicles that can be fully charged in just 10 minutes.

This recent battery breakthrough at Harvard involves lithium metal batteries, which are solid-state, and offer the ability to be recharged and discharged more than 6,000 times. This innovation surpasses any other technology we know of. These batteries also have ten times more capacity than commercial graphite batteries, which could have significant implications for the range of electric vehicles.

The innovative method of manufacturing these batteries is described in a study published in Nature Materials. One of the main problems faced is the formation of dendrites, which can cause short circuits or even fires. The researchers addressed this problem by using silicon particles in the anode, which prevent the formation of dendrites and ensure a homogeneous coating of lithium metal.

This development paves the way for more practical solid-state batteries that can be used in industrial and commercial applications, with the ability to be reused for thousands of charge and discharge cycles.

Professor Li and his team of researchers have announced an innovative battery design for electric vehicles that uses lithium metal around a silicon particle, creating a kind of “shell” that allows the battery to be recharged in about 10 minutes. The plating and stripping are done quickly on a flat surface, allowing for rapid recharging.

The battery, which is about the size of a postage stamp, was developed by the researchers and is 10 to 20 times larger than the coin cells typically used in university labs. This battery also exhibits exceptional durability, retaining 80% of its capacity even after 6,000 cycles, outperforming conventional batteries.

Adden Energy, a company founded by Professor Li and three Harvard alumni, has licensed a technology that allows the manufacture of a smartphone-sized battery case. This development paves the way for advanced applications in portable devices, thereby creating new possibilities in the field of technology.
