Microsoft continues to improve and add more features to the Windows 11 Notepad app , the latest of which is a built-in character counter .

Until now, users who needed a quick way to count characters in a text file were forced to use alternative third-party programs, such as Notepad2 or Notepad++.
As of Notepad version 11.2311.29.0, available today to Windows Insiders on the Canary and Dev Channels, Microsoft has finally caved in and added a character counter to Notepad's status bar.
According to Microsoft, “when text is selected, the status bar displays the character count for both the selected text and the entire document.”
If no text is selected, the character count for the entire document is displayed, ensuring you always have a clear picture of the length of your document.
The company also added an “Edit with Notepad” option to the File Explorer context menu, which allows any file to be directly opened and edited using the Notepad text editor.
In December 2021, Microsoft released a redesigned version of Notepad for Windows 11 to all Windows Insiders on the Dev Channel, after first previewing the app's new design in June 2021. The revamped text editor now offers a dark theme and multi-level undo, two of Notepad's most requested features

Earlier this year, Notepad was also upgraded with support for tabs and improvements to the management of unsaved files, such as a built-in indicator for unsaved changes.

With today's Canary release, the company also began testing a new way to "unlink" the Windows Copilot AI assistant to make it easier to access while working on a busy desktop with other application windows.
Additionally, new widget panel settings have been added that allow users to choose which feed appears in the widget panel.
The company also introduced Server flights, starting with today's preview of the Windows Server 26010 test version in the Canary Channel.
To set up the Windows Server preview build, you need to go to Settings > Windows Updates > Windows Insider Program to enroll device in the Windows Insider Program.
