Google Chat has unveiled a new redesign for its Android and iOS versions, introducing a new visual format and navigation system.

According to online reports, Google Chat is undergoing a major redesign on Android and iOS, along with the introduction of a new icon. The redesign includes a “new bottom navigation bar” with four tabs/sections that match the upcoming web version, replacing the previous two tabs (Chat and Spaces) on mobile.

  1. Home: Provides a unified view to keep track of all conversations, with a filter that lets you focus on unread messages.
  2. Direct Messages: Displays a concise list of all individual and group messages, with pinned texts at the top of the list.
  3. Spaces: Offers a concise list of all spaces, with pinned conversations at the top.
  4. Mentions: Helps you easily locate messages from conversations and places where you've been mentioned.

How the app is reorganized and expanded is fairly simple to understand. However, the actual implementation of the design seems quite strange.

Google showed off what this upgrade looks like in the built-in Gmail mobile app. Now, there's a single "Chat" button — between emails and meetings — in the bottom bar, instead of the two (Chat and Spaces) that were there before.

The four new sections of the service appear in an additional pill-like shape above the bottom bar, with a new chat button on the right. Each section will have a badge for unread messages, while the bottom bar will have a unified counter. However, the approach in Gmail seems quite mixed.

This navigation upgrade follows the chat bubble upgrade that gives Chat a feel very similar to Google Messages.
