The new Smart Display feature is very similar to the StandBy feature that will be coming to iOS 17 later this year. StandBy allows iPhones to act as smart displays when they’re plugged in and turned horizontally. The feature works somewhat like an alarm clock, setting the display to a dim red color at night while you’re sleeping, while also adding widgets that can be viewed and controlled from your smart home directly from StandBy.

Interestingly, this feature, or something very similar, was first rumored for the iPad late last year, but Apple didn't announce it for its tablets at WWDC 2023. Whether it will come to future versions of iPadOS 17 remains to be seen.
