CDPR is expanding the presentation of Cyberpunk 2077's Phantom Liberty expansion, due out this fall, which made a big splash during the Xbox showcase and the press previews that followed.

One of the most interesting things revealed by the new information is how the expansion fits into the base game, as unlike most expansions, narratively, it cannot take place after the main, mostly tragic ending of the original.
- The expansion takes place midway through the game. If you play the game from the beginning, you'll reach a certain point and Phantom Liberty will open up for you. It unlocks when you reach Brigitte and the Voodoo Boys.
- However, if you want, you can jump straight into Phantom Liberty itself without having to play X years of the base game first. This is how The Witcher 3 expansions worked.
- CDPR says that, as expected, Phantom Liberty has a different ending for the expansion depending on your actions and decisions.
- However, they also said that you can unlock a new ending in the base game based on what happens in Phantom Liberty. I'm not sure if that means multiple new endings for the base game, because it would be weird if all the different endings in Phantom Liberty led to the same ending in the base game, but we'll see. The new ending for the base game is based on your "new relationships, characters, and situations" from Phantom Liberty, they say.

This contributes to the theory that Phantom Liberty could unlock a "happy ending" for V. Or at least one that's less sad than the game's other main endings, which either result in V erasing Johnny and later dying, or Johnny replacing V forever, or one or both of them going on a suicide mission.
As seen in the trailer, the government promises V a real cure for the chip bomb in her brain if she helps them. And what we wonder is whether this cure could possibly work and the game could create a new “normal” ending, where V can survive into the future and future games, free from an incurable disease and with or without Johnny.
This hasn't been confirmed, of course, and it's more likely that in the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 we'll be playing as a new character. But I think it's possible, and I think CDPR knows how attached people are to Vs. Even though he's a created character, he's one of the best-realized first-person heroes in a game thanks to good direction and excellent voice acting. But we'll have to see where Phantom Liberty leaves us.
