Nothing, a consumer technology startup led by OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei, will announce its first smartphone at an event on July 12, the company announced. The Nothing Phone 1 will be the company's second device, following the launch of the Ear 1 true wireless earbuds last year. The in-person event will take place in London alongside a simultaneous live stream at 4PM BST/11AM EST. Nothing is calling the launch Nothing (event): Return to Instinct.

“It’s our first smartphone and our most important product,” Nothing said in its announcement. “The true beginning of Nothing’s journey. To make technology fun again.”

The company has already officially announced several aspects of the smartphone. At an event in March, the company revealed details about the Nothing OS launcher, which will run on top of Android 11. This launcher was released in beta last month. The phone is said to feature transparent elements in design , have bright light strips on the back of the device , and be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon.

The smartphone represents the next step in Nothing's desire to create an ecosystem of connected smart devices. It plans to produce some of these connected devices, while partnering with third-party companies to produce others.
