Tesla has unveiled its new supercomputer, already the fifth most powerful in the world, and it will be the supercomputer Dojo . This supercomputer is used to train the neural networks that power Tesla Autopilot and its upcoming full self-driving AI system.

In recent years, Tesla has been focusing on computing power both inside and outside its vehicles. Inside, it needs computers powerful enough to run the self-driving software, and outside, it needs supercomputers to train the self-driving software powered by neural networks, which are fed an insane amount of data coming from the fleet.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has been teasing his neural network training computer “Dojo” since at least 2019.Musk says Dojo will be able to process massive amounts of video data to achieve vision-only autonomous driving . While Dojo is still in development, Tesla has unveiled the new supercomputer that will serve as a development prototype for what Dojo will eventually offer.

Tesla has been working on Dojo for the past few years, and Musk estimates it should be ready by the end of the year. However, the company has been developing other supercomputers on its way to Dojo, and now Andrej Karpathy, Tesla’s head of AI, revealed at the 2021 Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition Conference on June 20 the company’s new supercomputer that allows it to ditch radar and lidar sensors in self-driving cars in favor of high-quality, optical cameras.

Tesla's newest supercomputer has 10 petabytes of NVME "hot tier" storage and operates at 1.6 terabytes per second , according to Karpathy. With 1.8 EFLOPS , he said it could be the fifth most powerful supercomputer in the world, but later admitted that his team has yet to run the specific benchmark needed to enter the TOP500 Supercomputing rankings .

The Tesla engineer did not want to reveal further details about the Dojo project, but he said that it will be an even better supercomputer, optimized for training neural networks, compared to Tesla's current cluster.
