Original robotic solutions for a better world for all were presented by students of all levels of primary and secondary education at the Panhellenic Educational Robotics Competition 2021, which was organized for the seventh year by the Non-Profit Educational Robotics and Science Organization WRO Hellas, with COSMOTE. Despite the challenges of the year, more than 500 student teams registered for the Panhellenic Educational Robotics Competition on the theme “21stCentury : People, Networks, Artificial Intelligence”and presented innovative ideas and various robotic solutions in its various themes to the finalists.
Teams that distinguished themselves presented remarkable robotic proposals. The Star Team of the 3rdPrimary School of Agioi Anargyroi presented a robotic construction project inspired by the bridge designed by Da Vinci in the early 16th century and by Archimedes' grab constructed in the 2nd century BC, adapting it to the needs of today for safe, automated and fast passage of ships through canals. The Roboks1 team of the Ralleion Girls' High School of Piraeus had built the fastest robot to achieve the best time in the track race with the theme "Riga's Thurios and the Balkans". This particular team had a time of 39.6 sec to be able to complete the anniversary track for the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution. A "smart" smart aquaculture system, which combines fish farming with hydroponics for the faster and higher quality production of fruits and vegetables, was presented by the team from the 1st & 2nd EPAL of Galatsi, in the EPAL category "Agricultural Production and Standardization". The preliminary and final matches for all teams were held either with remote evaluations or with the physical presence of the students at the OTE Academy facilities. The finals of the competition were watched online by more than 5,000 people.
COSMOTE is one of the first private entities to systematically invest in the last 7 years in the dissemination of educational robotics and STEM in Greek schools, as a strategic partner of the Non-Profit Organization for Educational Robotics and Science WRO Hellas. The total number of student participations in the competitions has exceeded 25,000 to date. During this time, 7,000 teachers have participated in information seminars, 4,000 downloads of specialized educational robotics and programming materials for teachers and children have been made, and 600 educational robotics packages have been given free of charge to schools.
“The Real Robokids”: the story of the “true heroes of educational robotics” won a Silver Lion at Cannes
The experience and excellent performance of children involved in educational robotics and participating in national competitions has been captured in the best way in the first documentary on educational robotics in Greece, “The Real Robokids”. This documentary, which tells the story of the “true heroes of educational robotics”, was distinguished at a pan-European level, receiving a Silver Lion at Cannes Lions 2020/2021, in the “Non-fiction Film Over 30 minutes” category of the Entertainment Lions.
In the documentary, created by Ogilvy, the anxiety, passion, stress and love of the 6 Greek teams that participated in the Robotics Olympiad in Hungary have been recorded, as well as their triumphant journey from preparation in Greece to the top positions of the Olympiad, where they won 4 medals and 3 distinctions.
In order to make educational robotics better known in Greece, COSMOTE created the first films on the topic of educational robotics, Robogirl and The Real Robokids, which have exceeded a total of 7 million views on YouTube and have significantly contributed to the increase in participation in national competitions.
