Private 5G SA network at Aretaeio Hospital by COSMOTE TELEKOM within the framework of the 5G-SHEAL project

COSMOTE TELEKOM installed a 5G SA (Mobile Private Network) private network at Aretaeio University Hospital, exclusively for the needs of the hospital's operating rooms, the Training Center and the Radiology - Radiotherapy departments, within the framework of the 5G -SHEAL project " Planning of Surgical Procedures with Holograms and Educational Flow via 5G for Aretaeio University Hospital". By utilizing the 5G SA private network , doctors will be able to plan surgical procedures with 3D visualizations, train remotely and provide medical services in real time in remote areas via telemedicine.

Within the framework of 5G-SHEAL, COSMOTE TELEKOM developed an independent private 5 G SA (Mobile Private Network) network , installed an ultra-high-speed network infrastructure necessary for the interconnection with virtual reality cloud applications, while also installing an application monitoring platform. The private network ensures high speeds, high capacity, very low latency and high reliability, so that the critical functions of the hospital are supported safely and effectively. Authorized users (doctors, nurses and trainees) and advanced devices, such as VR/AR glasses or smart devices equipped with specially configured SIM cards, are connected to this private 5G SA network.

"At COSMOTE TELEKOM , with our private mobile networks, we reliably provide integrated solutions and cutting-edge technologies in important sectors, such as healthcare. This innovative private network and its enormous capabilities bring Aretaeion University Hospital into the new digital era, upgrading healthcare and by extension our quality of life," said Mr. Lykourgos Antonopoulos, Chief Commercial Officer Business Segment of OTE Group.

The 5G-SHEAL project continues dynamically

Beyond high-quality connectivity, the 5G-SHEAL project is developing an advanced digital health and environmental management ecosystem that combines telemedicine, real-time medical data exchange and collaboration tools between healthcare professionals, and air/water quality and electricity consumption monitoring. Through the project’s digital applications, doctors will have immediate access to critical information and imaging data, regardless of their physical location, supporting faster and more effective decision-making and facilitating collaboration between remote medical teams. At the same time, advanced 3D imaging capabilities, as well as AR (Augmented Reality) and VR (Virtual Reality) technologies, will offer doctors a more complete picture of cases, contributing to better preparation, planning of complex interventions and making more accurate clinical decisions. Finally, the Hospital's operations managers will be able to manage the environmental footprint and, with the support of Artificial Intelligence tools, aim to optimize it.

The 5G-SHEAL project is being implemented by a consortium of companies consisting of WINGS ICT Solutions as project coordinator and provider of digital health and environmental management applications, COSMOTE TELEKOM as technical manager and provider of 5G connectivity, the medical software company apoQlar and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. The project also includes the Phaistos Fund, which strategically invests in the research and development of services operating on 5G infrastructures in Greece. The project is co-financed by the European Union[1] under the CEF Digital program. Its implementation is expected to be completed in November 2027.

“At WINGS we design solutions that help healthcare organizations operate more efficiently, support healthcare professionals in making better and faster decisions, and contribute to the optimal use of their resources. We believe that digital technologies should increasingly take over the complex processes of information management and analysis, so that people can devote more time to what has the greatest value: caring for patients and improving their quality of life,” said Professor Panagiotis Demestichas, CEO and Chairman of the Board of Directors of WINGS.

Utilizing its know-how and experience, COSMOTE TELEKOM effectively implements large and complex ICT projects, which have established it as a partner of choice for both the public and private sectors.
