Do Exynos chips only exist to save Samsung money?

The Exynos 2100 appears to be the best chip Samsung has released so far.

It features the Cortex-X1 core from ARM with three other Cortex-A78 cores and four A55 cores that are less demanding on your battery. It also has an ARM Mali-G78 GPU for 40% better graphics than the previous generation, a three-core NPU for better AI on the device, includes 5G technology and is based on Samsung's 5nm manufacturing process for even greater battery savings.

You'll see it on Samsung's best phones - including the upcoming Galaxy S21. In a world where no one cares about the chip inside their phone or how much better one brand is than another, this would be great and everyone would be happy.

But here's the thing. We care that another brand that makes chips has marginally better AI response times, takes better photos , has better 3D graphics , has better battery life, and is a stunner when it comes to connectivity , especially the LTE and 5G kinds . As you can see, we're talking about Qualcomm Snapdragon.

The reason why the latest Snapdragon is a better chip than the latest Exynos is no secret. Qualcomm is a company that specializes in selling mobile chips, and its chips are really its only focus. Of course, the company has tried to get involved in other areas, but it hasn't been successful .

But Samsung doesn't just make mobile chipsets. Here's the conclusion that no one really wants to hear: the Exynos SoC only exists so Samsung can save money on its high-end and mid-range phones.

In some countries, Samsung will have to license Qualcomm's modem technology to even try to compete with the latest Snapdragon SoC (System on a Chip). To make things easier, Samsung simply ships a Snapdragon SoC with phones in those parts of the world – mainly North America. Everywhere else, the phones are equipped with an Exynos chip, which automatically gets a much cheaper price tag.

Samsung could buy a Snapdragon 888 for every phone model in every country and everything would be fine. Of course, their price would automatically increase, so the company wouldn't be able to compete and make a profit.

Do Exynos chips only exist to save Samsung money?

Don't get us wrong – the Exynos 2100 will be a good chip and will power a lot of devices. It will likely be refreshed and paired with an AMD GPU to power the Galaxy Z Fold 3. But there will be performance differences compared to a Snapdragon 888-powered model.

Millions of people outside of North America will buy a Samsung phone with an Exynos chip and love it because the chip really works very well. Maybe people shouldn't be so obsessed with having the best chip in their phone. We're sure few would understand the differences between two identical phones with different chips.
