Capitol Attack: Google, Apple, Amazon Ban Parler App

Amazon , Apple and Google have banned app Parler from their services and app stores following the attack on the US supporters Trump.

The Parler app has been filled with comments promoting violence related to the recent attack, something that is not acceptable to tech companies. Apple and Google have said they will only reinstate the app once Parler better coordinates its service .

The Parler app claims to promote free expression and interaction among users and is a favorite platform of conservatives who have been criticized by other apps like Facebook and Twitter.

Parler CEO John Matzeannounced on app that Amazon had informed him that it would no longer host his service on the Amazon Web Services platform. Previously, Apple and Google had also announced the removal of the app from their app stores.

“This was a coordinated attack by tech giants to kill competition in the market,” Matze wrote, noting that the Parler app had become very popular and successful in a short period of time. However, he did not mention the use of the app by people involved in the Capitol incident.

On Sunday afternoon, Matze said in a press conference that the company is working to improve moderation and remove prohibited content, namely posts that incite violence. “Parler is about bringing people together and finding common ground and peace. We do not condone or accept violence on our platform and we never will,” Matze said.

On Saturday, Apple announced that it had removed the app from its App Storebecause it violated its policy regarding user-published content.

“Apple has always supported diverse opinions on the App Store, but there is no place on our platform for threats of violence and illegal activity,” the company said. “Parler has not taken sufficient steps to address the proliferation of these threats to people’s safety. We have suspended the Parler app from the App Store until these issues are resolved.”

The company sent Parler a warning letter (on Friday) asking the app to improve its moderation . On Saturday, the iPhone maker said it was still seeing objectionable content and decided to remove the app.

A plan proposed by Parler did not satisfy Apple.

“Your response also refers to a temporary moderation plan, which does not meet current requirements,” Apple wrote. “While no system is perfect for preventing all dangerous or hateful content, apps must have robust moderation plans in place to proactively and effectively address these issues. A temporary ‘task force’ is not an adequate response given the extent of inappropriate content.”

Matze questioned Apple and said the company doesn’t take the same stance toward Twitter or Facebook. “They obviously believe that Parler is responsible for ALL user-generated content,” he said. “By the same token, Apple should be responsible for ALL actions that take place on its phones. Every car bomb, every illegal cell phone conversation, every crime that is committed and organized on an iPhone, Apple should be responsible.”

The App Store is the only way to distribute apps on iPhones, so banning a social app is a major problem for social media companies. On the other hand, in most cases, there is also the option of accessing it via a website.

Apple banned the app after Google, which had already (as of Friday) removed it from the Play Store for the same reasons.

“We are aware of ongoing posts on the Parler app that attempt to incite violence in the US,” Google said. “We recognize that there can be a reasonable debate about content policies and that it can be difficult for apps to immediately remove all prohibited content, but in order to distribute an app through Google Play, we require apps to implement robust content moderation.”

However, Google's ban won't significantly affect Parler (like Apple's ban) because users can "sideload" some apps without going through the Play Store (although this feature is disabled by default).

Additionally, Matze had warned that his app would be removed from Amazon's services after a group of employees called on the company to take action. " We cannot accept more bloodshed and violent attacks on our democracy ," Amazon employees wrote in a tweet.

A day later, their voices were heard.
