Windows: How to see which programs are consuming your memory?

Windows

Sometimes Windows computer users may notice slow response and refusal to run many programs . In this case, the memory (working memory) may be exhausted. When this happens, computers often use virtual memory, which can be much slower.

If you want to see exactly what's going on with your Windows PC, check what's going on with your memory. Below you'll see how you can check which programs are eating up all your memory.

First, you need to keep in mind that we are only talking about RAM and not storage . If you want to see which Windows programs are using too much RAM, you can use the “TaskManager”.

So, the first step in checking is to open the “Task Manager.” To do this, right-click on the taskbar and in the menu that appears, select “Task Manager.” Alternatively, press Ctrl + Alt + Delete and select “Task Manager” from the screen that appears.

If the simple Task Manager interface appears, click the “More details” button.

In the full Task Manager window, go to the “Processes” tab. You will see a list of all the applications and background processes running on your computer. All of these programs together are called “processes.”

To sort the processes and see which ones are consuming the most memory, click on the “Memory” column (the first cell that says memory and a percentage). The process using the largest percentage of RAM will appear at the top of the list.

So, at this point you can see which applications are consuming your memory but also check if there are any programs that are using much more than they should. Excessive memory consumption can be suspicious. What is considered suspicious has to do with the use of the Windows machine. For example, 4K videos or complex games require a lot of memory.

However, if you find a process that is consuming a lot of memory for no reason, or if there is a memory-hogging application that is not responding properly and will not close, the “Task Manager” gives you the option to end it. To do this, select the “problematic” process from the list in the “Task Manager” and click “End Task”.

The problematic program will close. This process may take a few minutes. If this does not work, try restarting your Windows machine. Restarting helps temporarily in such situations.

If you are running out of memory and experiencing problems, you may want to consider adding RAM to computer .

With the above process, which we read about on Howtogeek, you can see which programs are consuming your memory so you can make the appropriate decisions.
