Google Maps is improving its AR “Live View” feature, with new features like more accurate locations for saved items. Another update is showing the relative position of landmarks, according to an announcement on the company’s blog.
The AR “Live View” feature first launched last May and uses camera to visually guide you along a route using large arrows and pins.
Now, Google Maps Live View also shows nearby attractions. The location of the attractions, as well as the distance and direction you need to take to get there, are displayed on screen .
For example, the feature can show you the direction and distance to a landmark to help you orient yourself in the area you are in. This feature includes other iconic landmarks, as well as places like local parks and even tourist attractions.
Google is also integrating live directions into the “Get Directions” tab. This could be useful if you only plan to walk part of your route – for example, if you’re using public transportation and then have to walk to get to your destination.
Last month, a Google Maps location sharing feature became available for Pixel users. Soon, location sharing will also be available for all Android and iOS users .
When a friend shares their location with you, just tap their icon and then tap Live View to see the location and distance.
If someone shares a pin with you, Google Maps has been working to make pin locations more accurate by taking into account a place's elevation. While this feature isn't available yet, the rest of these updates should be available now.
