Samsung is close to creating solid-state batteries

Researchers at the Samsung Advance Institute of Technology (SAIT), in collaboration with Samsung in Japan, appear to have discovered a way to create batteries , which are very likely to replace conventional lithium-ion batteries in the near future.

As experts point out, this change will take time and batteries of this type are not expected to be released before 2024. However, companies prefer them because of the advantages they have over common lithium-ion batteries and have been working on this project for a long time. However, it is not yet complete and it will take time before they are released on the market.

Samsung, on the other hand, made it possible through extensive research and advanced engineering. researchers used a very thin (5 micrometers) layer of silver carbon on the anode of the batteries, which prevents the formation of dendrites.

Along with other technologies used, the new battery has twice the energy density of existing lithium-ion batteries and has a range of 800 kilometers. It can be charged up to 1,000 times, offering up to 800,000 kilometers of driving range for electric cars.

Since they have a higher energy density, these batteries will be smaller in size. This means there will be more free space in electric vehicles to be used for various other purposes.

Of course, this is only a small part of what solid-state batteries will be able to offer, since according to experts they will revolutionize the energy.

Unlike lithium-ion batteries that lead to the formation of dendrites upon rapid charging, due to the liquid electrolyte, which can eventually lead to ignition, solid-state batteries do not form dendrites.

According to John B Goodenough, who works on solid-state batteries and is the same man behind the success of lithium-ion batteries, solid-state batteries have 2.2 to 5 times the energy density offered by lithium-ion batteries.

They can go through up to 1200 charge without suffering major degradation of their cells. In contrast, lithium-ion batteries will suffer the same degradation after just 500 charges.

Solid-state batteries can operate in temperatures from -20 to 60 degrees Celsius.

These are therefore batteries with longer life, greater safety and higher energy density compared to lithium-ion batteries.

Also, as Mr. Goodenough says, these batteries can be made from environmentally friendly materials, at a lower cost. However, until now, companies have spent quite a lot of money on the manufacture of such batteries. Only Samsung has so far managed to create a functional package, but it is expected to be expensive.

Nevertheless, as this technology continues to develop, it is very likely that in the future we will have an affordable and optimized battery.
