Tesla is designing a 110 kWh batterythat will allow its electric cars to travel 400 miles on a single charge. It's the largest batteryit has ever built.
During Tesla's shareholder meeting last month, CEO Elon Musk said Tesla's cars are very close to that.
At the time, the Model S 'Long Range' was the vehicle with the 'longest range' (370 miles).
Since then, the company has made some upgrades so that the vehicle can cover 390 miles on a single charge. The upgraded model is called the Model S Long Range Plus.
The greater range is due to improvements in software.
Now, however, Tesla is planning upgrades hardwarethat will further enhance the Model S and other company.
Jason Hughes, a well-known Tesla hacker and parts reseller, hacked into the latest updates to system and found that the automaker is planning a new battery.
Based on the latest BMS firmware, Tesla is working on creating a 109 kWh battery.
Such a battery could allow the Model S to cover 400 miles on a single charge, so it looks like the promise Elon Musk made last month will come true, and soon.
Covering 400 miles on a single charge is a significant achievement and could help combat the perception some people have about electric cars and short range.
