Google and IBM may be competing for quantum supremacy, but Amazon, acting as a middleman, has announced that it is launching a preview of its Amazon Braket service.
The new project is the company's attempt to turn quantum computing into a service that you can access online and was announced about a month after Microsoft announced Azure Quantum
“Amazon Braket is a fully managed AWS service, with security and encryption at every level,” the company says on its blog
For now, it looks like a very limited service, where Amazon's enterprise customers will be able to experiment by running simulations on a set of existing quantum computers from partners D-Wave, IonQ, and Rigetti. (IonQ is working with Microsoft on the Azure Quantum project.)
"This new service is designed to let you get some hands-on experience with qubits and quantum circuits. You can build and test your own circuits in a simulated environment and then run them on a real quantum computer," Amazon says.
The company also says it is creating the “AWS Center for Quantum Computing,” a lab near the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) where it will be able to explore its quantum computers, as well as more uses for quantum computers. The director of the company’s quantum computing center confirmed to Wired that Amazon is working on quantum hardware.
Theoretically, quantum computers could calculate much faster than traditional supercomputers, because their binary digits can exist in multiple quantum states, rather than using on (1) or off (0).
But quantum computers are rare and extremely expensive. So companies like Amazon and Microsoft are trying to offer them in a shared, managed environment, as Amazon already does with its AWS computing platform. This invisible empire of servers serves as the backbone for many of the Internet services you use today.
