iOS 12.2 has officially been released to all Apple, with a number of new features, including the all-new Apple News+ magazine subscription service. The update is available for all iPhones ,iPads, and iPod touch and includes new changes, features, and improvements.

This is a very big update, which will likely be the last before the release of iOS 13 in beta later this year.

New features in iOS 12.2

In addition to the aforementioned Apple News+ subscription service, other changes included in the new iOS concern the Siri digital assistant, Apple TV remote integration, Apple Music, and more.

For example, there are new Safari improvements that make it easier to find what you're looking for with search suggestions, and improvements to AirPlay that make it easier to control Apple TV from the Lock screen or Control Center. There are also four new Animoji characters, for those of you using devices with a TrueDepth camera, like the new iPad Pro, iPhone XR, and iPhone XS.

Apple News+

Apple News+ is a new subscription service that extends the Apple News experience with hundreds of magazines and leading newspapers. It offers:

  • Top articles and magazines, along with personalized recommendations for the topics that interest you most.
  • Automatic magazine downloads for offline reading.
  • Available in Canada, with a free experience that includes curated Top Stories, a personalized Today feed, and support for both English and French.
  • Available in the U.S. and Canada, with dozens of additional Canadian magazines.
  • 1-month free trial, then $9.99 per month.

Animoji

Four new Animoji characters are included, including: giraffe, shark, owl, and warthog.

AirPods

Support for new second-generation AirPods.

Apple Music

The Browse tab makes it easier for you to discover new music and playlists by displaying more features on one page.

AirPlay

Control Center and the Lock screen now have dedicated quick-access TV controls.

AirPlay multitasking – browse other apps and play other audio and video files on your device, without interrupting AirPlay.

AirPlay destinations are now grouped by content type, making it faster to find a target device.

Apple Pay

Apple Pay Cash customers can now transfer money to their bank accounts instantly using Visa debit cards.

The Wallet app now displays Apple Pay credit and debit transactions right below the card.

Safari

Connecting to a website is done automatically after you fill in your credentials with Password AutoFill.

Warnings now appear when loading unencrypted web pages.

Support for the Do Not Track standard is being removed.

Intelligent Tracking Prevention now protects against cross-site tracking by default.

The Smart Search Field can now be modified by tapping the arrow icon next to the search suggestions.

Screen Time

The shutdown time can be set with a different schedule for each day of the week.

A new toggle allows you to temporarily enable or disable app limits.

Siri

Ask Siri on your iPhone or iPad to play any video, song, movie, sports game, or other show on Apple TV.

Additional bug fixes and improvements

Supports Air Quality Index on Maps for the US, UK and India.

Includes information in Settings about the time remaining on your device's warranty.

Supports real-time text (RTT) for phone calls via an iPhone that is near the iPad and iPod Touch.

Displays a “5G E” icon on iPhone 8 and later, iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation), or iPad Pro 11-inch, indicating that users are in an area where AT&T’s 5G Evolution network is available.

Improves the quality of audio recordings in Messages.

Improves the stability and performance of the Apple TV Remote on iOS.

Fixes an issue that prevented some missed calls from appearing in Notification Center.

Addresses an issue where a signal notification would appear in Settings even though no action was required.

Addresses an issue in Settings > General > iPhone Storage where the storage size of some large apps, the System category, and the “Other” category in the graph may be incorrect.

Fixes an issue that may cause recordings to automatically play after connecting to a car Bluetooth device.

Addresses an issue that may cause a record to be temporarily prevented from being renamed.
