A new bug is hitting Microsoft 's Surface devices , as a recent firmware update is causing inaccurate battery life reporting on many devices.
According to user posts, the issue appeared after the latest Microsoft updates. Essentially, when the device is plugged in, the corresponding icon does not appear on the screen.
Additionally, users explain that the remaining battery life is not displayed accurately, with sharp drops that often lead to unexpected shutdowns due to depleted batteries.

Unfortunately, this particular bug affects more than one model and so far we have encountered similar behaviors on the Surface Pro, Pro 3 and Pro 4. The Surface Laptop and Book appear to be unaffected.
The strange thing is that many users are revealing that they first encountered this bug on the Surface RT, which makes us wonder if this is a permanent malfunction of Microsoft's devices. As Microsoft's first Surface, the Surface RT was released in October 2012 and ran Windows RT.
“I am very disappointed. My battery capacity is listed as higher than its default design, so SP3 has an incorrect update regarding its life. This causes shutdowns because while you see 20% remaining battery life on your screen, it is actually dead.”
Microsoft, for its part, has not yet acknowledged the problem, so it remains to be seen when and if a fix.
