Linux: Stack Overflow, the largest and most trusted online community for developers, recently published the results of its annual developer survey conducted in January 2018.
More than 100,000 developers participated in the annual Developer Survey, which covered a variety of new topics from coding ethics to artificial intelligence (AI). The results reveal that some technologies and operating systems have become more popular than some that previously held the top spots.
According to the survey, JavaScript continues to be the most used programming language for six consecutive years, back-end developer is the most common developer, over 80% of participants consider it their hobby and 92.9% of them are male. Finally, Node.js is the number one framework used by developers.
Additionally, MySQL and SQL Server remain the most common databases, Rust is the most popular programming language for the third consecutive year, Redis is the most popular database for the second consecutive year, and Visual Studio Code is the most popular integrated environment.
To our surprise, the open-source Linux platform has dethroned Microsoft's Windows operating system as the most widely used development platform. Specifically, this year's survey shows that Linux is used by 48.3%, compared to 32.9% in 2017.
This year, Windows fell 5.6%, from 41.0% to 35.4%, across both desktop and server systems, followed by the Linux-based Android mobile operating system at 29%. Apple's macOS is in fifth place in this year's survey with 17.9%, followed by the Raspberry Pi at 15.9%.
The survey also shows that Amazon AWS (Amazon Web Services) cloud platform is more popular than Google 's Cloud Platform/App Engine and Microsoft 's Azure .
