After unveiling the next-generation Bixby 2.0, Samsung recently announced that it will bring the Linux PC experience to Samsung DeX.
Samsung recently announced Samsung Dex as a way to turn phones into full desktops or workstations by attaching a monitor, mouse, and keyboard. DeX is currently limited to the Galaxy S8 and S8+ as well as the Note 8, offering an office experience powered by your smartphone.
Now, Samsung is looking to expand the capabilities of DeX by introducing “Linux on Galaxy,” a new concept that promises to bring the Linux experience to your phone. Linux on Galaxy comes in the form of an app that you can install on your smartphone to run multiple Linux-based operating systems.
“Although still in beta, Linux on Galaxy is a groundbreaking solution that will bring the Linux experience from PC to mobile and then to a larger screen with Samsung DeX. Now developers can code on their mobile on-the-go and with Samsung DeX, work can continue seamlessly on a larger screen,” says a Samsung spokesperson.
With the Linux on Galaxy app, developers will be able to use their favorite GNU/Linux distribution on their mobile devices. When you use Samsung DeX with Linux on Galaxy, you can also run Linux apps that are not available on your smartphones, which feature Google's Android operating system which is also powered by the Linux kernel.
Best of all, Samsung Linux on Galaxy will allow developers to use a fully functional development environment to create content on a big screen, and it will all be powered by Samsung S8/S8+ or Note 8 devices.
