Romania's anti-corruption protests have been making headlines in recent days as over half a million people took to the streets to express their discontent over the executive decree issued by the government in late January.
Almost a week has passed since the protests began, and Romanians are still gathering in Victory Square with the aim of justice and the resignation of those responsible for issuing the executive decree which essentially allows high-ranking politicians to avoid criminal consequences.
But the evening of February 5thmade history in a special way. Nearly 250,000 people gathered in Victory Square and lit up the dark sky with smartphones in a symbolic gesture that aimed to prove to the country's politicians that the Romanian nation was watching everything.
Romania may not be the first country to embrace the so-called “culture of protest,” but it is certainly one of the most civilized and digitalized countries in the world. Despite holding the title of the most corrupt state, it is home to some of the most productive programmers in the world.
We should also emphasize the fact that Romania gained access to new technologies and services much earlier than countries such as the United Kingdom, Germany, France and Italy, which are considered more developed.
However, with its latest protests, Romania is leaving its own mark and declaring that it belongs to "European societies with good manners" as protesting with smartphones is considered anything but aggressive.
