The establishment of an independent body for informing, educating and training internet users in internet technologies and web code was announced by the former head of the Electronic Crime Prosecution Service, Manolis Sfakianakis, at a press conference he gave at a central Athens hotel.
The former Hellenic Police officer did not hide his bitterness about his removal from the force, saying characteristically that “what starts well ends in pain”, however, he stated that he does not hold any anger and is excited about his new professional step. “I have no complaints about my life. It is time for me to leave the Hellenic Police”, he said and reiterated that his anger fortunately only lasts two seconds.
At the same time, he praised the work of the service he headed, describing it as a “model department” throughout Europe, while referring to the early days of the service, referring to… Kapodistrias. “I was like Kapodistrias with the potato. They called me a dreamer, I had to prove that there is crime on the internet, through the cables,” he noted characteristically and reiterated that he leaves satisfied with his work, which brought children to GADA for an educational trip.
Referring to the operation of the Institute, he emphasized that it is a non-profit organization that will aim to educate children, primarily, in internet technologies with a scope and headquarters in all jurisdictions of the Greek territory.
"President Obama said that those who don't know programming code are like illiterate people," he commented, also revealing that his project has already attracted funding and will operate in collaboration with the state and the Greek police.
Finally, when asked about the possible staffing of the Institute with former colleagues from the Prosecution Service, he clarified that he "is not dismantling services" and is leaving, leaving the "best Prosecution Service".
