A strange and macabre bug on Facebook has suddenly started displaying a message on users' profiles, informing their friends and family that the user has died.
The news was reported by Business Insider and states that certain users are seeing a bar above their profile that reads the following:
We hope that the people who love [Username] will find comfort in the thoughts we share to remember and celebrate his life.
The message also includes a link to a Facebook where you can inform the company of details about the user's death.
The bug doesn't appear to be affecting everyone, and it's unclear at this time how widespread it is or what's causing it. Business Insider reports that it saw the message in question on CEO Mark Zuckerberg's account, but when we visited it, we couldn't find anything related. In fact, we haven't been able to find anyone "fake dead" so far, and it appears to be a problem that doesn't affect the platform globally.
Facebook has not provided any explanation for the bug, but we expect to hear more about what exactly happened soon. We hope we didn't disappoint them, as we wrote an article a day ago about the ability to tell Facebook what will happen to your account after your death.
