Yahoo becomes the first company to publicly disclose emails from the United States National Security Agency (FBI).
Today, Yahoo announced that it received three FBI letters requesting data disclosure and proceeded to publish these letters.
The company says this is the first time anyone has publicly admitted to receiving such letters since the US Freedom Act.
This is a bill passed last year and was created in an effort to rein in government data collection demands and allow companies to challenge data requests through National Security Letters.
Although the letters that have been publicly disclosed so far provide very little insight into the US government's requests, today's disclosure sheds more light on the FBI's secretive process for collecting internet user data.
