Solitaire: its creator was not paid a single cent

Solitaire , and Microsoft will hardly create something similar that is as addictive as the popular card game.

Microsoft Solitaire

But when it comes to Solitaire , or Patience, if you prefer, few people really know how the title was created and how it ended up becoming the top Windows game to date.

It was created by Wes Cherry during his summer internship at Microsoft in 1988, before it was eventually included in Windows 3.0.

But read the story of the toy and its manufacturer who today practices the profession of cider producer (an alcoholic drink made from apples).

A Reddit article reveals that the creator of solitaire never earned a single cent from the game and is currently a cider producer, having founded the company Dragons Head Cider, which produces alcoholic products from apples.

“I wrote it for Windows 2.1 in my spare time while interning at Microsoft during the summer of 1988. I had been playing a similar solitaire game on the Mac instead of studying for college finals, and I wanted a version for myself on Windows. At the time, there was an ‘internal company within a company’ called Bogus software. It was basically a server where a bunch of kids had fun hacking into Windows to learn about APIs,” explained Wes Cherry.

"A program manager for the Windows team saw it and decided to include it in Windows 3.0. It was made clear that he wouldn't pay me, but would give me an IBM XT computer to fix some bugs during the school year. I was perfectly fine with that arrangement, as I still am to this day.".

In case you're wondering what happened next, Wes Cherry eventually went on to work for Microsoft on the Excel team, but in the meantime, he also created a second game called Pipe Dream. Although the game was less popular than Solitaire, he made some money from it, in the form of Microsoft stock, which he later decided to sell for a few thousand dollars.
