A DDoS attack can cost over $400,000

According to research results from Kaspersky Lab and B 2 B International , a DDoS attack on a company's online resources can cause significant losses, ranging on average from $52,000 to $444,000, depending on the size of the company.

DDOS Attack

For many organizations, these costs have a serious impact on a company's balance sheet, but at the same time they also damage its reputation, since partners and customers lose the ability to access online resources.

The overall costs arise from various problems that businesses face after a DDoS attack.

According to the survey, 61% of DDoS attack victims temporarily lost access to critical information. 38% of companies were unable to perform core operational activities, while 33% of respondents reported losing business opportunities and contracts.

Furthermore, for 29% of DDoS incidents, a successful attack had a negative impact on corporate creditworthiness, while in 26% of cases it caused an increase in insurance premiums.

When calculating the average cost of losses, experts also included the costs of restoring the consequences of such an incident. For example, 65% of companies used consulting services from digital security specialists, 49% of businesses paid to modify their IT infrastructure, 46% of victims had to turn to lawyers, and 41% turned to risk managers. And these are just the most common expenses.

Information about DDoS attacks and the resulting disruption to business operations often becomes public, adding to the risks. 38% of companies have suffered reputational damage as a result of a DDoS attack, and nearly one in three affected organizations had to seek the assistance of corporate communications consultants.

“A successful DDoS attack can disrupt critical operations, resulting in serious consequences for the company. For example, attacks on Scandinavian banks earlier in 2015 (most notably, the Finnish OP Pohjola Group) caused a few days of online services to be disrupted, while also disrupting the processing of bank card transactions – a common problem in cases like this. This is why companies today need to emphasize protection against DDoS attacks and consider it an integral part of their overall cybersecurity policy. Today, protection against DDoS is just as important as protection against malware, targeted attacks, data leaks, etc.,”said Eugene Vigovsky, Head of Kaspersky DDoS Protection at Kaspersky Lab.

Kaspersky Lab technology provides continuous access to its customers' online resources, even during complex, time-consuming and previously unknown forms of DDoS attacks.

Kaspersky DDoS Protection transfers data traffic to Kaspersky Lab’s “clearing” centers during an attack, filtering malicious traffic so that the client receives only legitimate requests. This prevents infrastructure and services from being overloaded.

More information about the Kaspersky DDoS Protection solution is available on the Kaspersky Lab website.
