Facebook: OpenPGP public keys for encrypted notifications

Starting today, Facebook users can find OpenPGP encryption keys on their profile to enable encrypted email notifications.Securing Email Communications from Facebook OpenPGP

In a post, Facebook says the new feature is in experimental stages. Once enabled, users will be able to send end-to-end encrypted email notifications from their Facebook profile to email accounts.

If a user enables encrypted messages but does not add an OpenPGP key, then Facebook will encrypt the messages using its own key.

For now, the new feature can only be managed from computers and not mobile devices.

"To enhance the privacy of email content, starting today we are gradually rolling out an experimental new feature that allows you to add OpenPGP public keys to your profile.

"These keys can be used for end-to-end encryption of notifications sent from Facebook to your preferred email," the company says

“You can also choose to share OpenPGP keys from their profile, with or without the ability for encrypted sharing.”
