According to a new survey published by Canadian broadband management company Sandvine, more and more people are using encrypted connections to access the internet.
In 2013, the bandwidth consumed by encrypted traffic doubled in North America. In Europe and Latin America, it quadrupled, as TorrentFreak points out.
Specifically, in Europe, where the percentage of encrypted Internet traffic was 1.47% last year, it has now reached a healthy 6.10%. In North America, the percentage of encrypted Internet traffic reached 3.80% this year, up from 2.29% last year. In Latin America, the bandwidth consumed by SSL connections increased to 10.37% in one year, up from just 1.80%.
Of course, even now, the rates remain low, and there is still a long way to go. In a utopian ideal future, we would all be using encrypted connections, but as we mentioned, we are still a long way off. It will be quite interesting to see how this trend develops in the coming years. Of course, don't expect the NSA to stand idly by and watch it happen.
