Malware in a message claiming you crashed a car

How would you react if you received an email from someone claiming that you had hit their car? The sender even attached a photo of the damage you caused and urged you to look at it. Opening it would be a big mistake.

The scammers seem to have discovered the above method to trick their victims by sending them an e-mail titled “Car accident with your car.”

“Good morning! You hit my car on the road. Look at these photos in the attached file and contact me as soon as possible. Otherwise, I will take legal action,” the message reads.

The file it contains (the name can always be changed) is called IMG_0612.zip, and inside the zip is not an image, but a Malware. Cisco discovered the first messages on March 17, but according to Hoax Slayer and others, they are still circulating today.

If you encounter such a message, do not open it. If you do open it, do not run the attachments as they are malicious .exe files and not photos, as the message claims.

If you are already a victim of this scam, scan your entire computer with a reliable anti-virus and change all the passwords you use online.
