Hewlett Packard has unveiled a new mobile app that retailers can use to track people who are shopping and send targeted ads and offers.

The iOS app, called SmartShopper and presented at the conference in Las Vegas, has the ability to send offers based on the smartphone's location to iPhone users in real time.

It is being promoted by HP as a way for retailers to monetize their networks and as a way to build “closer relationships with their customers.” Dominic Wilde, who spoke at Techworld in California last week, said: “It has very precise location capabilities, so we can pinpoint a device up to 2m, which is 60% better than anything else on the market today. In the best case, even under 1m.”
