Peter Sunde, co-founder of The Pirate Bay, needs your help to create a messaging app that is impenetrable to intelligence agencies.
The app is called Heml.is (the Swedish word for “secret”) and is a messaging app for iOS and Android. It uses end-to-end encryption to ensure that no third party – governments or ISPs – can intercept your communications.
"We like the internet, social networks and the power it gives for the exchange of opinions and social relationships. What we don't like, however, is that private communication is more or less open to governments or various other businesses," states the official page of the Heml.is application.
The app is crowdfunded and has a goal of $100,000. So far, it has raised $27,000 and counting. Users who donate $5 or more receive licenses to use the new app and other perks, depending on the size of the donation.
With a video explaining the purpose of the app, Peter Sunde makes references to the recent PRISM scandal, the secret NSA program .
