Today's Google Doodle is dedicated to the life and work of Douglas Adams.
A science fiction writer of several comedies, Douglas Adams is perhaps best known for his work The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It began as a radio comedy, then was published as a "trilogy" of five books. The first edition was published in 1979. It was later adapted into a Hollywood film.
The doodle marks the anniversary of his birth. Adams was born on March 11, 1952, in Cambridge, and died in 2001 at the age of 49 in Santa Barbara, California, after suffering a heart attack.
It contains doodle features from Adams' most popular works.
It shows a cup of tea – a reference to Dirk, a detective hero in a novel by Adams called Long Dark Teatime of the Soul. It also shows a towel, something Adams said was essential for those traveling in space.
Douglas Adams also wrote three episodes of Doctor Who starring Tom Baker.
He became known for his atheist views and love of technology. In addition to his science fiction works, Adams also wrote about some of the world's most endangered species in his book Last Chance to See.
