More than 6,000 websites are participating in the online protest that began on February 11, 2013, against the mass surveillance of citizens by the American National Security Agency (NSA). The protest, called “The Day We Fight Back,” urges Internet users to call or email members of Congress asking them to vote against proposed changes to a bill introduced under the leadership of the NSA that would allow for the legalization of Internet surveillance.
The event comes two years after another successful online protest against SOPA and PIPA, which resulted in the committee voting against the bills.
As the event organizers state on their website, “In January 2012, we defeated SOPA and PIPA , which aimed to legalize internet surveillance. Today, we face a more critical threat, the legalization of mass surveillance by intelligence agencies.”
