Researchers have discovered a zero-day in iOS 8that could cause Apple such as iPhones, iPads , and iPodswhen the devices connect to a malicious wireless network.
It works like a DoS (denial of service) attack on devices running Apple 's operating system , resulting in the crash of either individual applications or the user's entire iPhone.
NO iOS Zone
Adi Sharabani and Yair Amit of mobile security company, Skycure , presented their recent research titled “ NO iOS Zone ” at the RSA security conference in San Francisco.
It is possible for an attacker to create malicious Wi-Fi networks to crash users' phones in close proximity with incredible accuracy. The No iOS Zoneis capable of rendering devices within range unusable by triggering a fixed number of reboots.
It is nothing more than a DoS attack.
...which makes the device inaccessible to the user, just like in the case of websites or servers.
[blockquote]“Anyone can take a router and create a [malicious] Wi-Fi hotspot that will force devices within range to automatically connect to the hacker's network and then manipulate the traffic in a way that will cause applications and the device's operating system to crash.”[/blockquote] Sharabani specifically mentions in his speech at RSA.
So what can you do to get rid of the malicious Wi-Fi? Just run away! The only thing you can do is get out of range of the malicious network. It's not a DoS attack where you can't use your Wi-Fi, but where you can't use your device at all. Another good protection measure is to not connect to any open Wi-Fi you find with your phone.
Both Sharabani and Amithave contacted Apple about the issue, but it is still unclear whether the company will release a full fix or not. Because of this, the SkyCurehas decided not to make any further disclosures about the hole and the exploits.
