The announcement by Uber that it will come to Athens has ignited a firestorm among Greek professional taxi drivers.
Using its Facebook , the company posted a photo from Athens and stated that it cannot leave Athens out of its services.
Specifically, it states "Finally, we're here! 200+ cities around the world and would we miss Athens?".
The photo was enough to spark a comment war from professional drivers and other users.
At the same time, representatives of the taxi industry declare they are ready to confront the company in a war scenario that is not unique in our country.
The Uber has caused reactions in other countries as well, but the service also has fanatical supporters.
Uber started as a ridesharing service (i.e. 2 users could share each other's car for a ride). It started in San Francisco in 2010 and expanded to various countries around the world.
In Greece, the Ministry of Transport warns that Greek legislation only allows the operation of taxis, chauffeur-driven vehicles, licensed limousines and minibuses.
It is currently unknown which Uber services will be available in Athens.
With Uber, a user can call a luxury vehicle with a private or professional driver to take them to their destination. In addition to luxury vehicles, the user can also call a taxi that cooperates with the service.
