When John Wainwright placed his order on Amazon, he probably didn't know that he would, in a way, make history. What he bought was the first item ever sold through the online shopping platform.
That maiden order, placed on April 3, 1995, was for a philosophy book. It was “Fluid Concepts and Creative Analogies,” by Douglas Hofstadter, which Wainwright ordered while he was at work, he said. In fact, he has kept the receipt with which he received the book.
